Yaana (meaning: Sail) is a novel written by novelist S.L. Bhyrappa, which has a story of two astronauts (a man and a woman) traveling in a spaceship to Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the earth which is around 4-6 light-years away. The journey takes several decades. The novel focuses on scientific problems and human relationships when they are away from earth. While generating oxygen and food on the spaceship the technical problems, the other issues are giving birth to children there and nurturing them.
The name of the novel itself is interesting as when translated, it says "Dreams of Silent Granny". Although the author does not want to mention any of the characters as lead characters, it's Granny and her grandson who are the two main lead characters of this novel. Grandson represents every human being who has doubts about the origin of superstitious beliefs and tradition. Grandma in this novel has got the strength of seeing the things which are going to happen and which are happened before in the form of dreams. Mookajji represents our beliefs in this book. She tries to reveal our true beliefs.
ಪರಸ್ಪರ ವೈರುಧ್ಯಗಳನ್ನೇ ಅದೃಶ್ಯ ತಂತುಗಳಿಂದ ಸಂಯೋಜಿಸುತ್ತ ಸಾಗುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೊಂದು ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ಕೃತಿ. ಜೀವನದ ವಿರಾಟ್ ಅರ್ಥ ಹೀನತೆಯ ಪರಿಧಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಅದರ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣತೆಯನ್ನು ಅನ್ವೇಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಸಂಗತ ಘಟನಾವಳಿಗಳ ಸರಣಿಯನ್ನೇ ಸುಸಂಗತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೇಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯ ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಹಾಸ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ವಿನೋದಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿರೋಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಶತಮಾನದ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತನಾಲ್ಕು ಗಂಟೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಮಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಲು ಆಶಾವಾದ, ನಿರಾಶವಾದ ಇವುಗಳೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಮೀರಿದ ಗಂಭೀರ ಎದೆಗಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಇದು ನಮಗೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ
